S-100A: Basic Fire Suppression and Safety Annual Refresher
The S-100A is an annual refresher course that can be taken by anyone who has taken the S-100 within the last five years. It must be taken annually to be considered valid.
The S-100 Basic Fire Suppression and Safety course is intended to prepare contract firefighters and industry workers that could be exposed to wildfire risk during the course of their work activities to perform basic fire suppression activities.
It is recognized by the BC Wildfire Service to meet the training requirements under Section 26.3.1 “Forestry Operation Fire Fighting” of B.C.’s Occupational Health and Safety Regulation.
S-185: Fire Entrapment Avoidance & Safety
The S-185 Fire Entrapment & Avoidance course is designed to prepare those who are planning to work in fire suppression activities in a capacity beyond initial fire suppression efforts required by industry workers. It is designed to prepare contract firefighters and machine operators to work safely in fire suppression activities for ongoing periods of time.
S-100: Basic Fire Suppression & Safety
The S-100 Basic Fire Suppression and Safety course is intended to prepare contract firefighters and industry workers that could be exposed to wildfire risk during the course of their work activities to perform basic fire suppression activities
It is recognized by the BC Wildfire Service to meet the training requirements under Section 26.3.1 “Forestry Operation Fire Fighting” of B.C.’s Occupational Health and Safety Regulation.
This in-person 2 day course includes 1 day of classroom theory and a written examination and 1 day of practical field exercises. Participants learn about fire behaviour, fire line organization, fire suppression, fire suppression methods, fire suppression equipment and fire line safety among other topics.
Successful participants receive an S-100 certification card which they can keep valid year after year by taking the S-100A (annual refresher).

Jared Smith BSc. is a natural resources professional with over 12 years of experience in wildfire operations as a crew leader for both the BC Wildfire Service and contract crews and as a danger tree faller.
He is endorsed by the BC Wildfire Service to teach S100, S100A, and S185 courses.
He enjoys teaching courses to firefighters and industry workers and draws on his experience in adult education to create an interactive learning environment for participants.
